With more snow forecast for us this coming week, winter shows no signs of giving in just yet. Keep your hard working hands toasty in these super-simple fingerless gloves – find out how to make them below!

This is a simple one-piece pattern that you can draw up yourself with ease – I’ll show you how. These gloves are so quick to make, and they’re a great project for accessorizing a costume or repurposing old clothes.

You will need:

  • Paper (preferably gridded) and pen or pencil
  • Paper & fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine – or needle & thread!
  • Stretch fabric – preferably a fleece backed or heavyweight jersey knit (like hoodie material), or double layer an old t-shirt
  • Beads, stencil, or whatever you want to embellish with

1. Draw around your hand (remember how much fun this was when you were a kid… well it still is!) You don’t need to go around your fingers, just up to the point you want your gloves to stop. Keep your fingers together and spread your thumb comfortably.

2. Straighten out the lines you’ve just drawn, and close the “gaps”.

3. Add a seam allowance (I usually leave 1cm). If you want to leave raw edges like I did, you’ll only need them along the seam lines – left, right and thumb gusset.

4. Cut out your pattern using paper scissors.

5. Draw your pattern out onto your fabric, twice face up, and twice face down (mirrored).

6. Cut out your pieces (shown here is one glove only). At this point, you can add any printed/stencilled/embroidered/appliquéd embellishment. You may want to leave beading or sequins for later if they’re going to fall close to the seams, to avoid breaking them/your needle :)

7. Put your left facing pieces on top of your right facing pieces, right sides together. Sew your gloves together along the three seams, remembering to use an appropriate needle in your machine if you’re using one (to make sewing stretchy fabrics a less stressful experience!).

8. Turn your gloves inside out , finish off any embellishment and enjoy!
